United Kingdom: The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle
Instituted: 29 May 1687 (believed based on an earlier order of chivalry).
Awarded: For services to Scotland and to the Crown.
Grades: 1 (Knight or Lady of the Thistle).
Post-nominal letters: KT or LT
The collar, mantle and hat are worn at ceremonies of the Order in St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.
On formal occasions, members of the Order wear the badge, on a sash worn over the left shoulder, and the star. The ribbon is not worn on those occasions when ribbons only are worn.
