Instituted: 30 August 1892 by Toffa, King of Porto Novo.
Became a French Colonial Order on 10 May 1896.
Discontinued: 3 December 1963, being replaced by the French Order of Merit.
Awarded: To citizens of Dahomey and France, particularly members of the French armed forces, for services to Dahomey and in the area.
Grades: 5 (Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight).
