Ribbon: Gold with a cream bead-pattern border and recurring images of a rhinoceros, also cream.

Instituted: 6 December 2002.

Awarded: To South African citizens for excellence and exceptional achievement, generally in the fields of medicine, science, literature or statesmanship.

Grades: Originally 3 (Platinum, Gold and Bronze), a Silver class being added in 2004.

Post-nominal letters: Platinim - OMP, Gold - OMG, Silver - OMS, and Bronze - OMB.
